Learning, achieving, working together

Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

This year, your class teacher will be Miss McParland.   I will be joined by Mrs Lopez,  Miss Pynaert and Miss Powell. This will be an exciting year!  We are looking forward to seeing the children progress and supporting them in their learning as they follow and demonstrate our three school values:

Be Kind.

Show Respect.

Aim High.

Please ensure your child is coming into school with the correct uniform and all items labelled.  They will need:

A named water bottle, coat, and wellington boots (these can be left at school).

A named book bag with their reading book and reading record.

PE days will be on Mondays and Thursdays.  Children will need a full, named PE kit with appropriate footwear.

Forest School will be weekly on Wednesday afternoons (for this first half term) and then again in the second half of the Spring term.

Reading - Each child will have a fluency reading book linked to our Phonics learning.  They will also have the opportunity to take home a library book chosen by themselves.  Our reading expectations are that the children will read at least three times a week at home before their book can be changed.  Please sign their reading records to show that they have done this.  Reading books will be changed every Thursday.  We encourage you to read with your child as much as you can at home to support them in becoming a fluent reader.  It is incredibly important to not only listen to your child read, but also ask them questions about the book to see if they understand the story and certain vocabulary. They will gain pleasure in listening to and discussing stories as much as they will when reading for themselves.

Maths - we are following White Rose Maths and will be learning through practical and pictorial activities.  In the Autumn term our focus is on Place Value within 10.  We will be counting, sorting, ordering, representing and recognising number.  We will be comparing groups and using vocabulary such as more, less, fewer, greater than and equal to.

English - we engage the children in literacy through using picture books - fiction and non-fiction.  We will be focusing on punctuation - using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.  We will talk about the story - what it's about and what has happened and learn new vocabulary.  The children will use Phase 3 and 4 Phonics in their writing and practice letter formation.

Science - This term's topic is: Animals including humans.  Key areas of learning will be sorting and classifying  different common animals and their features e.g. fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and animals, identifying similarities and differences between animals and using scientific vocabulary such as feathers, beak, fins and scales.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child's learning, I will be available by the class gate at the start and end of the day.  Should a longer meeting be required we can arrange a further appointment.

Thank you for your support.

Miss McParland
