Welcome to Year 1

It is lovely to be back at school with the children.  We are looking forward to a fantastic year ahead.  

The Year 1 team are as follows: Mrs Stokley, (EYFS/KS1 Lead, Class Teacher), Mrs Haynes, (Forest School), Miss Swinbank (After School Club) and Miss Johnson. 

 

Important Information

P.E. is on Tuesday and Wednesday every week. Reading books will be changed weekly.  

Children need the following named items in school every day:

• coat
• water bottle (water only please)
• wellies

• if possible, a change of clothes in case of accidents or messy play

• reading book and reading record book (orange). No Purple Mash for us just yet.

Before we start any learning, we take time to ensure that the children feel safe and are ready to learn.  We prepare the body and mind with whole body movement, breath work and finger exercises, as well as, Dough Disco.

English: This half-term, we will be practising oral and written sentences – using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. We will learn what makes a good sentence using nouns, verbs and adjectives.  We will continue with our phonics scheme of work and start Phase 5, for our challenge in the summer (Phonics Screening Test).  We will be enjoying texts linked to ourselves, our local area and our pets. 

Maths – we are following White Rose Maths and will be learning through practical and pictorial activities.  In the Autumn term, our focus is on Place Value within 50.  We will be counting, sorting, ordering, representing and recognising numbers.  We will be comparing groups and using vocabulary such as more, less, fewer, greater than and equal to.

Science – This half-term we will embrace Summer through to Autumn and enjoy the colours of the natural world.  We will explore the senses and how we use them in our everyday lives.  We will also study animals, including humans.  Key areas of learning will be sorting and classifying different common animals and their features, e.g. fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and animals, identifying similarities and differences between animals and using scientific vocabulary such as feathers, beak, fins and scales.

Geography/History – We will be studying maps, globes, atlases and exploring Google Earth.  We will make our own maps of our bedrooms, the school playground and the local area.  We will learn about the history of Warners End and Hemel Hempstead and identify physical features, i.e. rivers, mountains and human features, i.e. shops, a school.

Art – We will be mixing primary colours to make secondary colours and how to use black and white to make different tones of the same colour.  We will draw and paint a self-portrait.

We will also be enjoying Music, R.E. and Computing.
