Learning, achieving, working together

Year 4

Welcome to Year 4! We’re so excited to have you in the class!

Mrs Isufaj will be your class teacher, and Miss Varney will be there supporting all week as the teaching assistant. You'll also see Miss Fahy throughout the week, and she’ll be teaching on Tuesdays and Fridays. It's going to be an amazing year, and we can't wait to learn and grow together!

PE sessions will be on Mondays and Thursdays. Please ensure your child has a full Micklem PE kit, including appropriate trainers.

Year 4's Forest School sessions will be during the Spring 1 half-term. Further details will be provided closer to the time.

Homework
Please read with your child daily and record this in their reading record. Homework will be set weekly on Purple mash, TTRS and Spelling shed each Friday and due back on Thursdays. Homework will not be set over the holidays.

Purple Mash - One activity per week linked to the week's learning.

Spelling Shed - Weekly spellings set with an expectation of two games to be completed.

TTRS - 10 minutes per week on Garage.

Reading
Children are expected to read a minimum of 5 minutes daily at home and record this in their reading records (signed by an adult). Children are provided with a book which has been pitched appropriately to their reading level using a colour banded system. In school, we have daily guided reading sessions, reading across the whole curriculum and we also share a book for pleasure every day for fifteen minutes before lunch.

Maths
Maths at Micklem follows the White Rose Maths scheme.

In Autumn term, we focus on securing our understanding of place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and conclude with an introduction to area. Spring term will introduce decimals and fractions, perimeter and length, whilst further consolidating multiplication and division. Finally, Summer term will cover decimals, money, time, shape, statistics and position and direction.

Multiplication Tables Check
In Year 4 we will have a government multiplication test, we spend a lot of time ensuring children are prepared for this by developing a secure understanding of multiplication and practicing regularly. Our Aim high is that the children will feel confident when undertaking this test.

The MTC is 25 questions long and children have six seconds to answer each question. There is a three-second pause between questions so that they don't get overwhelmed. The short time given to answer the question is because the test is measuring what pupils can easily recall.

English
At Micklem, our English lessons are predominantly taught through the use of books, both fiction and non-fiction. This year, the children will read lots of exciting books including Big Friendly Giant, How to train your dragon and The Firework Maker’s Daughter.
