Learning, achieving, working together

Year 5

Welcome to Year 5!

We are learning to blog- please visit our blog at   to comment on our posts and help our learning.

For the Summer Term we are learning about ' Villains, Scoundrels and Rogues' starting with highwaymen. We will be reading The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes and learning about 2 local 'highwaypeople' from Markyate and Hemel. We will also be reading Oliver Twist and learning about his life as a pickpocket in Victorian London. Look in the gallery to see us getting dressed up and acting in role.

This term our topic is the Ancient Mayans, an ancient civilization that lived in Central America. Most of us had never heard of them in January, but by the end of term we hope to have learned lots about them.

In the autumn term our topics were Monarchs, when we learnt all about Kings and Queens of England since 1066 and Our World, where we focused on rainforest climates. To see more of our learning have a look on the Year 5 page in the gallery.

This term Year 5 will have P.E on Thursdays. We may have another P.E lesson during the week so please leave indoor and outdoor P.E kit in school.

Homework menus will be given out at the start of each half term. English and maths homework may also be given out from time to time

We are continuing with Terrific Times tables  and Big spellings which will be tested on Tuesday and Thursday respectively.

Children are expected to bring their reading book to school with them everyday and read at home with an adult regularly.

Reading diaries are collected on Friday where it is expected that the children have read at least 5 times in a week, which includes at least one session with an adult, and the diaries have been signed by their grown up.
